Pause & Play: Because Healing Is Not All Progress and Productivity

Healing Needs More Than Productivity

At Embrace Change, we love growth.

We love milestones.

We love transformation.

We love seeing people take brave next steps.

We love witnessing the moment someone realizes, “I am becoming.”

But around here, embracing change is not only about progress and productivity.

Sometimes, the most healing option is pause.

And sometimes, the most sacred option is play.

Yes—play.

The joyful, messy, creative, silly, soul-resetting kind of play.

The kind that reminds the nervous system that life is not only survival.

The kind that helps the body remember safety.

The kind that lets the mind breathe.

The kind that opens the heart without forcing it.

The kind that says, “You are allowed to enjoy your life while you are still healing.”

As trauma-informed, lived-experience humans, we know that healing is not always linear. Some days call for structure, planning, appointments, reflection, advocacy, and serious grown-up responsibilities.

Other days call for paint on the table, dirt under the fingernails, music loud enough to change the mood, and a willingness to follow the green lights just to see where the road wants to take you.

At Embrace Change, we believe both matter.

The progress and the pause.

The plan and the play.

The accountability and the adventure.

The work and the wonder.

What Play Looks Like for Us

For Andrea, play often shows up through creativity.

Art.

Color.

Gardening.

Flowers.

Community events.

Paint parties.

Sacred circles.

Beautiful messes.

Garden magic.

A canvas that becomes a conversation.

Creative play helps Andrea return to herself. It gives emotion a place to move. It gives the unseen a way to become visible. It turns healing into texture, color, rhythm, ritual, and connection.

For Jason, play has its own rhythm.

Legos.

Baking.

Writing.

Building worlds.

Creating structure.

Following imagination.

Making something with his hands.

His play is thoughtful, detailed, inventive, and grounding. It reminds us that creativity does not have to look one way. Sometimes it is a story. Sometimes it is a recipe. Sometimes it is a tiny brick clicked into place until something whole begins to appear.

Following Green Lights

And then there is the play we share together.

Andrea, Jason, and Raven.

Drives with the music up.

Windows down.

No perfect destination.

No strict timeline.

Just movement, breath, sound, laughter, sky, and the occasional sacred practice of getting lost.

We call it following green lights.

A few moons ago, Andrea wrote a song for Jason called “Chasing Green Lights.”

It carried the feeling of love, devotion, movement, and wandering together:

Following green lights.

Getting lost.

Trusting the road.

Finding each other along the way.

In 2022, those words were a love song.

Now, they feel like a prophecy.

Because somewhere in the middle of getting lost, we found ourselves.

Not all at once.

Not perfectly.

Not without detours, grief, frustration, wrong turns, snacks, silence, laughter, and “where are we even going?” moments.

But slowly, gently, honestly—we found more of who we are becoming.

That is part of the Embrace Change story too.

Not just bariatric surgery.

Not just weight release.

Not just wellness plans.

Not just appointments, labs, routines, and healing work.

But life.

Real life.

The kind where healing includes rest.

The kind where progress includes joy.

The kind where nervous system care includes laughter.

The kind where love includes getting in the car and letting the road surprise you.

Making Room for Pause & Play

This is why we want to make room for Pause & Play at Embrace Change.

Because people who have survived hard things do not only need more tasks.

They need safe joy.

They need permission to explore.

They need creative outlets.

They need community.

They need softness.

They need rhythm.

They need to remember that play is not childish. It is human.

Play can be a practice of presence.

Play can be a form of nervous system repair.

Play can be a way to reconnect with the body after years of disconnection.

Play can be a bridge between who we were and who we are becoming.

Play can help us move from survival into aliveness.

So yes, we are here for the practical supports.

We are here for conscious consulting, peer support, wellness tools, mindfulness, skills, life, body change, advocacy, and grounded next steps.

And we are also here for the play.

The paintbrushes.

The Legos.

The cookies.

The gardens.

The music.

The windows down.

The dog in the backseat.

The song that becomes a memory.

The green lights.

The getting lost.

The finding ourselves.

At Embrace Change, we are not here to turn healing into another performance.

We are here to make space for a fuller life.

A life with support.

A life with breath.

A life with beauty.

A life with laughter.

A life with room to pause.

A life with permission to play.

Because embracing change does not always mean pushing forward.

Sometimes it means pulling over, turning up the music, opening the windows, and letting joy ride with you for a while.

Together, anything is possible.

And sometimes, the way forward begins with play.
